The electricity grid of the future

IRENE (“integration of renewable energies and e-mobility”) is a pilot research project, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economics, which aims to identify approaches for feeding power from fluctuating decentralized renewable energy sources into the grid. Smart metering plays an important role in this project, which was launched jointly by Allgäuer Überlandwerke GmbH, Siemens AG, Kempten University of Applied Sciences, and RWTH Aachen University. The German newspaper “DIE ZEIT” publishes an article (in German) entitled “SMART GRID: Mit schlauer Power“, which describes this project.

CI Workshop Papers Accepted

22nd Workshop Computational Intelligence

Two papers, which were written by SPOTSeven team members, have been accepted for the  22nd Workshop Computational Intelligence.

The first paper is entitled “Ensemble-Based Model Selection for Smart Metering Data” and continues our research related to smart metering, which is based on our cooperation with GreenPocket.

The second paper analyses multi-criteria optimization with SPOT in real-world settings, i.e., when the number of function evaluations is limited. Both papers are based on cooperations with our industrial partners.

Theory and Principled Methods for the Design of Metaheuristics

This book is edited by Dr. Yossi Borenstein (Head of risk analytics at the company VisualDNA) and Dr. Alberto Moraglio (Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the School of Computer Science at the University of Birmingham). The book is announced as “valuable for practitioners and researchers. It explains theoretical basis of key metaheuristic techniques. The contributing authors are among the leading authorities on the theory of evolutionary computation, search, and heuristics.”
Mike Preuss (Technical University Dortmund) and I contributed the chapter “Experimental Analysis of Optimization Algorithms: Tuning and Beyond”, which summarizes our experience from tutorials and workshops presented at CEC, PPSN, and GECCO conferences. The book will be available in November 2012.

Modular Cyclone Modelling – Case Study with Steinmüller Engineering

The case study “Implementation of modular models for cyclone dust separators” will start in September 2012 at Cologne University of Applied Science. The case study “Time-Series Prediction for Smart-Metering”, which is supervised by Prof. Dr. Bartz-Beielstein, Dr. Naujoks, and Martina Friese, will start in September 2012 at Cologne University of Applied Science. It will be done in close cooperation with our industrial partner GreenPocket GmbH. Three master students will apply modern time-series prediction methods to smart-metering data. Continue reading
