This talk focuses on the central role of Evolutionary Computation in the future of design and manufacturing, and how academics in the field of Evolutionary Computation can make rapid and impactful contributions to the innovations in these industries. It starts with an introduction to Autodesk Inc, its vision regarding the Future of Making Things (FOMT), Generative Design, and Dreamcatcher project. The speaker presents his personal experience and views on the current gaps between academia and industry in the field of software tools for design and manufacturing, touching on different aspects such as scalability, accessibility, user experience, flexibility, robustness, and targeting. The talk ends with practical recommendations for bridging these gaps between academia and design/manufacturing industries.
